Indigenous Adult Education Network News & Welcome Message
The Power of Unity
As Robin Wall Kimmerer reminds us, the trees remind us of the power of unity. It’s that unity and connection that is the strength of the Indigenous Adult Education Network.
We will see this in action in just a few days as the network gathers for two days of learning and connecting that will also inspire new course materials and resources to share right here on this website.
So far there are materials from Kativik Ilisarniliriniq and First Nations Adult Education School Council. We are looking forward to seeing our resources grow!
The poster at the top of this section is part of a growing series of small posters to honour teachers & learning. Here is a folder of the images with and without the IAEN logo. Feel free to use them and add your own logo if you like. (To add your logo or make changes, make a copy of the file called ‘_copy to modify teacher appreciation des enseignants.’)

This month’s poster includes a quotation from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book, Braiding Sweetgrass : “The trees act not as individuals, but somehow as a collective. Exactly how they do this, we don’t yet know. But what we see is the power of unity. What happens to one happens to us all.”
Construction Training Programs
Programs with the Construction Training Offensive have begun in many communities as we welcome second cohorts! In our monthly meetings, people speak about high graduation rates and the importance of these programs to train skilled workers who can support community housing initiatives.
IAEN Symposium
The 2024 IAEN symposium is here! Many of you will be gathering to share knowledge, projects, and successes over two days in Quebec City. Many of the presenters are teachers in our centres!

Amongst the workshops is a special two-day workshop on Trauma Informed Care with Wanda Gabriel and Pamela Gabriel-Ferland.
An essential part of care has to do with how we question our learners’ experiences. Can changing how we question, change how we offer services?

Training Offer: VT in Indigenous Context
Understanding the realities and needs of Indigenous communities is essential to establishing meaningful and lasting partnerships for off-site vocational training (VT) in Indigenous communities.
The training “Favour Vocational Training in Indigenous Context” is the result of a project funded by the Quebec government’s ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie (Joncas et al., 2022-2026). The aim of the training is to improve understanding of the realities and needs of Indigenous communities by non-indigenous partners and the key elements for establishing meaningful and lasting partnerships with Indigenous organizations in order to improve VT in an Indigenous context, and, ultimately, the graduation rates.

News from the Waseskun Healing Community
Waseskun: a Cree word referring to that time just after a storm, when the dark clouds begin to part, the blue sky appears, and the first rays of sunlight shine through.
Waseskun is an Indigenous healing facility, the only one East of Manitoba. It serves Indigenous men coming from the prison system. “Waseskun offers a transformative space for those seeking to heal from intergenerational trauma, addiction and criminal behavior.” (from the Waseskun website)
